Parasitology
Parasitology
Department website:
This subject takes place during the first semester and covers the most important parasites and parasitic infections. Each class begins with a short lecture, followed by examining parasites under a microsope and creating their drawings. Similar to the likes of histology and microbiology, you will need a notebook to draw in so make sure to have that ready.
For this subject it is a good idea to get an overview of the theory, but also recognize the pictures of the parasites as they will be examined on both the credits and the final exam. Ask students from the years above, as they will be able to give you advice on the drawings for the individual credits.
It is a good idea to start early, as there is a lot of information to memorise for each parasite, and trying to memorise it all in a few days before the credits will in most cases not be enough time.
Credit must be given for your drawings in each lab in order to sit in the credits.
There are two credits during the course, each consisting of 40 different styled questions with pass mark of 60%. Each test has about 1hr writing time.
The credits are a mix of multiple choice and short answer questions, with some of the questions being related to pictures presented.
Students must be well prepared for each credit as Parasitology is a very detail oriented course and each parasite must be known in depth. Due to many parasites having similar characteristics, it can be easy to get confused so make sure to give yourself enough time to memorise it all.
The final exam consists of 40 questions and students are given a fair amount of time to complete the exam. In order to sit the final exam, you must have passed both credits.
Exam questions are usually very similar to those in the credits, with a mix of multiple choice questions and short answer questions.
Exemption
Exemption is possible. You have to achieve 90% or above on both credits in order to get exempted from sitting the final exam.Credit received after passing the exam.
The final grade will be calculated as followed:
40% of the 2 credits + 60% of the final exam
= % determining the final grade.
