Emergency Medicine
Department website:
For this 2-week course, at the start of the semester, the department will provide your class representative with a schedule containing the location, time, and topic for each day and your allocated teacher.
Classes: Every morning starts with the class. Five classes in the Emergency Department (ER) in USK at 8:15, and five in the Medical Simulation Center (CSM) at 8:30 (although their schedule indicated otherwise).
PRPK: During the 6th year Emergency Medicine blocks, the classes will be followed by PRPK at 10:00 with attendance taken arbitrarily. This is an interactive discussion, where you will be presented different emergency cases and talk about the best approach.
Dr. Adam Jakubowski’s PRPKs: Instead of holding his three PRPKs, Dr. Jakubowski assigns a course called "ASLS-Angels: Advanced Stroke Life Support for Prehospital Providers" on www.angels-initiative.com. This free online course, for which you need to create an account, takes approx. 4–5 hours to complete.
Lectures: There are five lectures in Emergency Medicine, which are the only lectures during the 6th year. In 2023/24, they were conducted in person, and some found them helpful towards the final exam. In 24/35, nobody came to hold the lectures.
During blocks there is no form of assessment. Remember to collect signatures in you red booklets throughout your time here.
Scheduling: Depending on how your schedule is put together, the Emergency Medicine final exam could be one of your early finals set before the Winter break in 6th year. This is convenient to avoid the schedule being crowded towards the end of the academic year.
Exam Format: The final exam consists of 60 multiple-choice-questions in total. The questions are mostly short to medium length, with a few cases and a handful ECGs to interpret.
Passing Criteria: The requirement to pass the exam is 60%. The failure rate is typically quite low, and all students passed in our year.
Time Allocation: We had 60 minutes for the exam in total, giving 1 minute per question. Students found the given time limit more than enough.
Exam Procedure: There was only one set of the exam, and we marked our answers directly on the questionnaire. Results were published a few days after the exam. Insight was granted in the days after the results were announced, and there was no need to schedule with the secretary in advance.
Preparation: The teachers clearly informed us beforehand on which chapters of the ERC Guidelines and ITLS book to study besides the lectures. Preparing with the outlined resources, having paid attention during classes, as well as older materials were sufficient to pass the exam.
Exemption
There is no exemption possible. You will receive credits after having passed the exam.
Your grade will be taken solely from the exam.
