Clinical Course
Clinical Course
Once you have completed all required classes in 6th year, at the very end, you are required to take a 6 week elective course. In 2024/2025, the electives started end of April and lasted til mid June. Inbetween, we had our Internal Medicine exams, with many students finishing it before their elective concluded. Most departments were very understanding and flexible when it came to the schedule regarding the exams.
Your class representative will forward you a list of possible departments to choose from for the clinical course. Usually, you make your choice on a first come first serve basis, or get assigned a course by lottery.
Organisational note for the class rep:
It is best to explain what the clinical course is, and set a date and time for the sign-up in advance so all students can be aware and prepared. Expect the Dean's Office to reach out to you during the second semester of 5th year, at the latest before the summer break. Some of the available course choices in the academic year of 2024/2025 were the following: Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Cardiology (in Zurawia). We want to highlight that the list changes slightly each year!
You can influence your choices: Students can also preemptively make a list of departments they are interested in. You must have a minimum of 6 students interested in a department for it to become an option. Send this list to the Dean's Office for approval. Once the departments confirm or deny their participation, a sign up will be hosted by the class representative.
During those 6 weeks you will be in a group with the students who signed up for the same elective clinical course as you. Each day, you will be reporting to your chosen department where you will be having classes (just like the ones that were held during the school year).
These electives were a great way to spend 6 full weeks focusing on a specialty you might be considering later!
At the end of the 6 weeks, you get signatures in your red booklets, which should be the last stamps and signatures you need to complete them.
