Simulation Center
Simulation Center
Websites:
The Simulation Center (the "Sim Center") is found in ul. Szpitalna 30. All students will go there as part of clinical courses and electives, and may go there during their free time if they can find an assistant who is kind enough to supervise them during their free time (which is the hardest part to find and organize).
It doesn't make sense to start simulations before having had classes in a subject (e.g. Cardiology)
It doesn't make sense to start simulations on scenarios without having learned the algorithms and familiarized oneself with the theory first. Usually, there is no briefing before a scenario begins, so you must come prepared in order to know how to react. The debriefing at the end will always discuss and clarify the challenges of the scenario you just went through.
Simulations (and especially scenarios) make for an excellent opportunity to test how confident you are in your knowledge without getting graded or having to face serious mistakes.
There are plenty of recourses and machines available for the sole purpose of training students (for example ultrasound, ECG, bedsore prevention, injection, intubation, suture material, different catheters, endoscopy, laparoscopy, etc), which can be used by your assistants to enrich classes with you. It may be wise to ask your assistant if they can do a practical class with you in the Sim Center, too.
It makes sense to, as a group, be on your best behaviour during regular classes, come prepared and interested in order to convince your assistant to also train with you during their free time (if you want to train some more after all).
Your assistant has to contact the Sim Center (+48 85 686 52 40, csm@umb.edu.pl) to set up an available slot at least one day before. The Sim Center will ask them what rooms they need and what they want to do. This information can be read up on the CSM website beforehand, or inquired on the phone (in Polish).
Your assistant must also fill out the application form "Formularz zgłoszeniowy na zajęcia w CSM" found under the contact tab (https://www.umb.edu.pl/csm/kontakt), and send it to csm@umb.edu.pl (or bring it printed, I don't know).
Everyone must change shoes before entering the simulation rooms! Sim Center staff has removed students from class for not having changed shoes. There are lockers on ground floor.
You have to wait for your assistant in the lobby.
You cannot enter any rooms without supervision.
When the Sim Center was new, staff from the Cardiology department tested the new equipment during a scenario they played just for fun. Despite being in a room filled with absolute experts, the simulated patient ultimately died despite all of their efforts. (During the debriefing, they found that there were (too) many experts present who each followed slightly different algorithms.)
Use this anecdote to motivate you in a sense that you are not alone and thus should not feel stupid when failing a scenario. In general: never feel bad for having tried! Take this story as a reminder to cooperate, because despite you bringing the best of your knowledge to the table, you can always be wrong or make mistakes when not discussing your plans with others.
Good medicine is done in a good team!
